The Madison Square Garden Company has unveiled new images of its plans for a new spherical events venue in east London.
Designed by architect Populous, which also designed the nearby O2 arena, the Sphere will seat 18,000 across five acres in Stratford, directly east of the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre.
It is expected to feature an exterior capable of digitally showcasing artists and brands, an interior bowl with the world’s largest and tallest resolution media display, as well as hospitality and amenities.
The venue is the New York-based firm’s first foray outside of the US, where it owns New York’s Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and NBA team the New York Knicks, as well as several other properties and sports franchises.
Stratford’s Sphere echos the scheme already earmarked by MSG for Las Vegas.
The firm is aiming to submit a planning application to Newham council before the end of the year.
