MSPs back move to new parliament building at Holyrood

Members of the Scottish Parliament today voted for a new parliament building at Holyrood, narrowly rejecting a back-bench rebellion aimed at blocking the move.

The decision brings to an end a controversy surrounding the site of the new parliament that threatened to engulf the first term of Scotland’s fledgling government.

MSPs rejected an amendment tabled by Donald Gorrie (Lib Dem) and Margo MacDonald (SNP), calling for a review of the scheme, by 64 votes to 61.

Work on the new building, designed by Spanish architect Enric Miralles, was suspended ten days ago after some MSPs objected to spiralling costs, changes in design and insufficient infrastructure in the Holyrood area.
