Muji is planning to open four new UK stores in an aggressive expansion drive to increase its presence in Europe, generating £75m in sales by 2003.
As part of the roll-out programme, the Japanese-owned ‘lifestyle’ retail chain will open a 420 sq m (4,521 sq ft) store on Tottenham Court Road in November, making it the biggest Muji outlet in Britain to date. It will relocate its Carnaby Street premises.
The group also plans to increase its number of shops outside London and is set to open a shop at the Oracle shopping centre in Reading next month and another in Leeds city centre in November. The retail chain intends to open five stores a year, as long as suitable premises are available.
Muji currently has 10 outlets in the UK, all located in London with the exception of stores at the Trafford Centre in Manchester and Bluewater in Kent.
