Muse Developments has been selected to deliver South Tyneside council’s £100m South Shields 365 regeneration scheme.
The scheme proposes a new cinema, library, shops and leisure facilities as well as a hotel and new housing.
The council is also working with Tyneside Metro operator Nexus to bring improvements to the system, along with a new transport interchange.
Muse development director David Wells said: “This is an exciting challenge for Muse.
“Successful regeneration is about much more than bricks and mortar. It is about creating sustainable, vibrant communities where people are proud to live and work.
“South Shields has the potential to be a fantastic example of how regeneration can transform an area, and we look forward to working with the council and the local community in achieving this.”
South Tyneside council leader Iain Malcolm said: “South Shields 365 is a compelling vision and Muse’s expertise will add further strength to our plans.
“By connecting our beautiful seafront with the town centre and riverside, we can bring three distinct areas together into a seamless offer for residents and visitors to enjoy.
“In spite of funding reductions and a difficult financial climate, we are continuing to invest in bold and ambitious regeneration plans to deliver growth and prosperity for South Tyneside’s residents.”
The first phase of development will be a new community hub and library which is proposed to be on site in summer 2014.
