Wirral Growth Company, a joint venture between Wirral Council and Muse Developments, has submitted proposals for its £1bn Birkenhead town centre regeneration.
The 1.4m sq ft masterplan includes a new central business district with up to 280,000 sq ft of grade-A office space, alongside leisure space, a new market hall, homes, public realm and green space.
If the planning submission receives consent, the first phase of development will bring forward two office buildings totalling 190,000 sq ft, anticipated to be on site in mid-2021.
AHR is the masterplanner for the project, with Barton Willmore acting as planning consultant.
Plans for the town centre overhaul have been in the works since 2018, when Muse was chosen to be the council’s 50-50 jv partner on the scheme.
Mike Horner, development director at Muse Developments, said: “It’s a proud moment for all associated with the growth company as we reach this significant milestone, which is the culmination of months of hard work from the team to get this over the line ready for submission.”
Tony Jones, Wirral Council cabinet member for regeneration and growth, said: “The submission of this planning application provides a significant marker that we are moving forward in realising our aspirations for Birkenhead, which will secure jobs and improve the quality of life for our communities.”
