N17 need £1bn for regeneration

The regeneration funding budget in riot-hit Tottenham in north London needs to be increased by £900m, MP David Lammy has warned.

Almost £100m has been allocated to redevelop N15 and N17 after the summer’s riots, with £17m from the mayor of London, which is being used to convince Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur to stay at its stadium in Northumberland Park, and £10m for Chelsfield boss Sir Stuart Lipton to create a masterplan to transform the area.

Lammy said: “I welcome the funding being given to the area, and Sir Stuart Lipton spearheading a programme, but I am worried about the amount of money being proposed. I believe the area needs at least a £1bn investment. I am talking about the scale of regeneration seen at Stratford; that’s what I want to see for Tottenham.”

He added: “I am warning that until you see this scale of investment, I’m afraid we will see Tottenham become like Detroit, and we will see more unrest.”

Investing in transport hubs at Tottenham Hale and White Hart Lane, and opening new student loans and passport offices, are among Lammy’s ideas for attracting real estate and corporate investors to the area.

The MP also put his weight behind EG’s Building a Better Britain campaign. “We need to see some action,” said Lammy, “and we need to start moving with public and private support.”
