National Express unveils Brum Digbeth plans

Digbeth coach station

National Express has unveiled plans to transform one of Birmingham’s key gateway sites.

A detailed planning application has been submitted this week for the long-awaited redevelopment of the run-down Digbeth coach station.

The £15m project, wholly funded by National Express Group, will be complete in late 2009.

The project has taken over 20 years to get to this stage. Digbeth coach station has long been criticised for giving a bad impression to those visiting the city.

The existing station will be demolished to make way for the SBS Architect’s designed, copper-clad building.

The new scheme will include: a sweeping canopy above the concourse frontage, double height, fully glazed enclosed concourse, with additional office accommodation above the main concourse, a new information centre, open plan café and short stay customer car park alongside 16 coach bays.

Paul Bunting, chief executive, of National Express said: “This project will assist with the regeneration of Digbeth, the Eastside and the Irish Quarter and provide a landmark gateway into the city centre.”

The new building remains in the same location immediately adjacent to Digbeth High Street although coaches will enter via a new entrance in Bradford Street.
