Energy giant National Grid has lodged reworked plans for the redevelopment of the 90-acre Southall gasworks site in Ealing, west
The plans comprise between 3,400 and 3,750 houses, a supermarket, hotel, cinema, health centre and a primary school.
National Grid and former development partner Castlemore submitted URBED-designed proposals in June 2005, which included 538,000 sq ft of offices, manufacturing space, a hotel, 183,000 sq ft of restaurants, cafes and leisure uses, 64,500 sq ft of shops, 4,500 homes and a 1.1m sq ft depot for West London Tram, with airport parking for Heathrow.
The plans were thrown out by Ealing council which claimed there was too much housing and a lack of public transport infrastrucutre.
Castlemore and National Grid appointed MAKE to rework the masterplan.
Castlemore exited the partnership at the end of last year after National Grid decided to sell its land portfolio. In January, National Grid pulled the £700m sale because it had not received high enough bids.
National Grid said the development is now scheduled to go ahead in 2010.
A National Grod spokesperson said: “The old plans really turned their back on the local community and the canal and showed little sensitivity for the local area.
“What we have tried to do is to draw people in and create a sustainable community with everything people need within walking distance from them.”
