Architect Sir Denys Lasdun has died aged 86
He designed and built the National Theatre, on the South Bank, in London, and was noted for housing tower blocks, the University of East Anglia, Keeling House, in Bethnal Green, East London, the Royal College of Physicians in Regent’s Park, central London and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge.
Sir Denys, hailed as “the greatest English architect of the early heroic modern period”, received the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1977. Colleagues praised the “grandfather of modernism”.
