National Trust tenants face sharp ground rent rises

National Trust tenants are facing sharp rises in ground rents, some of up to 10,000%.

The Tenants Association of the National Trust is calling for an inquiry after one tenant was told his payments would increase to £15,000 from £148.

Most of the 10,000 people who live on National Trust land pay monthly rent, but around 300 paid an upfront amount to buy their homes under a leasehold agreement typically lasting 49 years and paying a nominal ground rent. On renewal, the tenants have found their ground rents will be much higher, unless they chose to buy up the higher ground rent by paying thousands of pounds.
