Native Land submits plans for Guildford Debenhams development

Native Land has filed plans for a residential scheme called St Mary’s Wharf at the former Debenhams site in Guildford, Surrey.

The developer has proposed 215 flats, 21,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space in a net zero carbon, all-electric development.

St Mary’s Wharf will be the first project in Native Land’s new strategy to reposition former retail assets in fundamentally strong UK towns and cities.

Native Land exchanged contracts to buy the site and 230,000 sq ft store from M&G Real Estate at the end of last year. Last month, the developer emerged as the frontrunner to acquire Cambridge’s Grafton shopping centre from Legal & General. The property was marketed with scope for a £300m life sciences campus.

Robert Harris, managing director of acquisitions at Native Land, said: “Our proposal for St Mary’s Wharf… exemplifies our strategy to create high-quality, sustainable developments which reimagine high street locations in the face of continued challenges from online retail.”
