Los Angeles’ elite are buying up neighbouring properties in an attempt to give themselves some privacy.
Estate agents in the Los Angeles area have said that celebrities are building mini-fiefdoms, paying millions more than the asking price to snap up the house next door.
The singer Adele is a leading example of the trend, buying three homes adjacent to her own to create a $30m Beverley Hills estate. Rihanna has also forked out $10m to buy the house next door to her $13.8m estate.
A similar spot of empire building has been seen with Snapchat boss Evan Spiegel’s assembly of a $100m compound in Holmby Hills, and Jeff Bezos adding a $10m neighbour to his $165m Beverley Hills estate.
