Net zero neighbourhoods are key to achieving UK’s 2050 goal

Developers must focus on 10 key areas if the UK is to lead on delivering net zero carbon neighbourhoods, according to a new report.

The Net Zero Neighbourhoods report, compiled by consultancy AESG, LDN Collective and West London Business, advocates for the expansion of net zero neighbourhoods across the UK as the country moves towards its 2050 goal.

The report recommends that developers focus on 10 key areas. They include optimising the window-to-wall ratio in buildings to ensure that energy use is minimised, thinking about the building fabric, making buildings all-electric, making use of heat networks and generating as much renewable energy onsite.

The report also recommends the use of digital twins to help monitor and react to efficiencies in buildings.

Max Farrell, founder and chief executive of the LDN Collective and chair of built environment for West London Business, said: “Addressing climate change at the neighbourhood scale is a complex challenge that can only be done collectively, and it needs immediate and radical action to be taken. Within the UK, government at every level has committed to achieve net zero within the next 15-30 years, yet local authorities face significant challenges funding the transition.”

Sam Luker, AESG’s associate sustainability director, added: “Approaching net zero from the neighbourhood perspective enables a more holistic and attainable approach to the decarbonisation of our urban environment.“

The report points to the importance of collaboration between public and private sector and recommends the development of innovative funding mechanisms and a focus on socio-economic value.
