Neville-Rolfe sidelined from Manchester regeneration initiative

Marianne Neville-Rolfe, appointed to spearhead east Manchesters regeneration initiative, has been sidelined by Manchester council after only nine months.

Howard Bernstein, Manchester councils chief executive, will take over the helm with immediate effect at the East Manchester Regeneration Co, while Neville-Rolfe will take on an advisory role.

The council said: “Marianne has been asked to undertake an advisory role on a range of key policy areas working with the CE of Manchester council.

“She established the EMRC on a firm basis, and the strategy for East Manchester is now well on course. Marianne has welcomed the opportunity to take on this new role.”

It is widely believed that, after joining EMRC last October, Neville-Rolfe has been a thorn in Bernsteins side.

Bernstein refused to comment, but a source said: “Howard and Marianne had their own separate agendas. The council secured a lot of public money for the initiative. It wanted more control.”

Manchester city council is a shareholder in EMRC, along with English Partnerships and the North West Development Agency.

Another source added: “Shed had a good reputation for delivery at the government office for the North West. But coming from that environment to the coal-face was a cultural change for her.”

Neville-Rolfe could not be contacted for comment.
