Former Oxford Properties managing director of UK, Europe and Asia Pacific Gawain Smart has been appointed chief executive of student housing business International Campus.
International Campus, which is majority owned by Brookfield, operates around 5,800 student houses in and across Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Czech Republic but has an ambition to grow to more than 10,000 units by 2023, deploying some €1bn (£870m) into the sector.
Canadian Smart takes over the position from Rainer Nonnengässer, who has served as chief executive since December 2019. Nonnengässer become executive chairman. Both hires take up their new positions on 1 June.
Smart, who has been advising International Campus and majority shareholder Brookfield for over a year, said: “International Campus has expanded its footprint significantly over the past few years. The opportunity for student housing and micro-living in continental Europe has never been stronger, and I look forward to working with Rainer and the senior team to progress the company to the next stage.”
Nonnengässer added: “I am looking forward to new challenges at International Campus group as executive chairman, where I will continue to help the company execute on its growth ambitions to build a leading student housing and micro-living platform across Europe.”
