New chancellor investigated over tax

The new chancellor, Nadhim Zahawi, has said claims that he faced investigations over his tax returns were “inaccurate, unfair and are clearly smears”.

It was reported over the weekend that the National Crime Agency investigated Zahawi’s finances in 2020, but did not find evidence that met the threshold for criminal charges.

However, it appears those concerns have been shared with HM Revenue & Customs, which has opened its own investigation into Zahawi, a self-made businessman worth at least £100m, with a nationwide property portfolio.

Zahawi said he was not aware of any investigation.
