As demand soars for the dwindling supply of council-owned allotments, private firms are stepping into the gap.
Roots is one such operator, offering plots from £9.99 a month on the outskirts of Bath. The 304 plots at Roots, which opened in April, are already fully booked and more are on the way.
Last year, the longest official waiting time for a council-owned allotment was in Camden, north London, at 18 years.
