Politicians and overseas investors dominate the top of the 2014 Estates Gazette Power List as nearly 60% of this year’s ranking is made up of new entries.
The influx of fresh blood emphasises just how quickly the UK property sector has changed in just 12 months as it continues on an upward trajectory. At least five overseas investors and developers who made their debut in the list last year have already dropped out of the top 50 to make way for new, powerful players.
The highest international debut entry this year was US Federal Reserve chairwoman Janet Yellen who came straight in at number two above any of the UK’s own most influential politicians and property powerhouses. Yellen’s inclusion has also resulted in the highest-ranking female entry in its four-year history.
Other high ranking debuts include Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond and shadow chancellor Ed Balls.
And in terms of pure property names, both Capital & Counties’ Ian Hawksworth and Berkeley Group’s Tony Pidgley have rocketed up through the list compared to this time last year.
This year the most powerful players have been ranked based on nominations from 30 senior industry figures with analysis of the new entries and remaining Power List stalwarts.
