Owners of storm-struck trees in 34 counties of England and Wales, plus London, can now apply for grant aid to tackle the damage.
The money is being channelled from Task Force Trees, a special unit of the Countryside Commission, through county and district councils and London boroughs.
Grants will be available for the replacement of individual or small groups of trees, normally on sites up to 0.25 ha; encouragement of natural regeneration; surgery to save damaged trees; clearance of sites of high landscape value; and restoration of historic parks or gardens.
So far, Task Force Trees have been given an initial £600,000 by the Government to cope with immediate problems.
