Greg Clark has been appointed secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities following yesterday’s sacking of Michael Gove.
Clark, the MP for Royal Tunbridge Wells, was most recently secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy, a role he held from July 2016 to July 2019.
The appointment was among the first confirmed in a cabinet reshuffle ahead of prime minister Boris Johnson’s resignation as leader of the Conservative Party. Scores of cabinet members and ministers have resigned this week in protest at Johnson’s handling of numerous scandals. Gove was sacked after advising Johnson to step down. Johnson has said he will remain prime minister until his successor is appointed in the autumn,
Between July 2011 until September 2012, Clark was minister for cities, and then financial secretary to the treasury until October 2013. Between then and mid-2016 he was minister of state at the Cabinet Office; minister for universities and science; and secretary of state for communities and local government. Before entering politics, he worked for the Boston Consulting Group consultancy, working in the UK, US, Mexico and Iceland.
