New look for New Street Station

The new team appointed to oversee the long-awaited £350m transformation of Birmingham New Street Station has provided a first glimpse of its proposals.

Infrastructure consultancy WSP Group was awarded a £3.9m design and development contract last week by Network Rail, with architects John McAslan & Partners and Chapman Taylor.

Will Alsop, who first designed the scheme before his practice folded last year, has criticised Network Rail for not allowing his new firm to complete the work.

The revamped station, which will have increased pedestrian capacity, should be open by 2011.
