An ambitious new plan should see Londons Somerset House become an arts complex by the year 1999. The historic property formerly occupied by the Royal Society and the Register for Births, Deaths and Marriages is to be converted into a performing arts centre with room for 4,000 seated or 7,000 standing.
The architect Inskip and Jenkins has designed a superstructure, and plans are under discussion to construct a concert and opera hall in underground vaults at a cost of £15m – £20m. Alternatively, the Quad could be covered with a removable acoustic shell and fully equipped with stage and lighting for under £1m.
