Sir Michael Pitt’s primary role as head of the new national planning body will be coaching and mentoring 35 other commissioners once the new Infrastructure Planning Commission is created in October.
He told MPs he would put himself in charge of relations with “stakeholders” and spend time creating a governance structure for the organisation that would ensure it was fit for purpose.
He said his independence would be constrained by the 200 pages of legislation that govern the commission’s operation as well as by the national policy statements passed by Parliament. Decisions will be subject to judicial review.
