New tower plans rise for Square Mile

US insurance giant WR Berkley is drawing up plans for a new tower in the Square Mile.

The firm has appointed architect Kohn Pederson Fox to prepare designs for the site at 52-54 Lime Street and 27 Leadenhall.

The first images are expected to be unveiled next week, but it is thought the building could top 40 storeys.

WR Berkley bought the 98,000 sq ft City office last year from PRUPIM for around £38m. The redeveloped property is expected to significantly increase the floorspace.

The insurer is expected to relocate its headquarters from nearby 40 Lime Street to the new development.

A spokesman said: “WR Berkley can confirm it has appointed the world-class architects KPF in respect of an office development scheme at 52-54 Lime Street in London.

“Our plans are in development and we are engaged in discussions with the Corporation of London. We will make an announcement once we have finalised our proposals.”

WR Berkley’s tower will be the first new planned tower in the City since Targetfollow submitted plans for 100 Bishopsgate in late 2008.

DTZ is thought to be advising.
