West Berkshire council has given planning consent for the first phase of the multi-million-pound redevelopment of Newbury Racecourse.
The project, which is a joint venture between David Wilson Homes Southern and Newbury Racecourse, is set to transform the 309-acre site. Outline planning consent for the site was given in April 2010.
The project will contain a hotel and up to 1,500 homes – 450 of which will be affordable shared equity housing or available to rent.
The detailed planning consent is for the Western Area, the first of three tranches of homes at the racecourse. It comprises 294 homes for private sale and 127 for affordable housing. The entire development will take around 12 years to complete.
The apartments will be of one, two and three bedrooms and there will also be two-bedroom maisonettes. Houses will range from two to five bedrooms.
Paul Crispin, managing director of David Wilson Homes, said: “There’s still much to be done before we can put a spade in the ground but without this consent we couldn’t move forward. It’s well reported that there’s a major shortage of new and affordable homes and this is a fantastic opportunity to deliver a great selection of new homes in such a fabulous historic location.”
