Newcastle approves £100m Newgate scheme

Newgate-Newcastle

Newcastle city council has approved Unite and McAleer & Rushe’s £100m plans for a mixed-use scheme in the Newgate Street area of the city.

The proposals include a 269-bedroom hotel, and a 575-bed student housing scheme to be developed and operated by Unite, and 21,500 sq ft for offices, shops or leisure use.

Nick Hayes, development director at Unite, said: “Newcastle is an exciting university city attracting students from across the UK and internationally. As well as easing pressure on private residential housing in the area this new development will provide an important contribution to the local economy.”

McAleer & Rushe project director Graham Mitchell added: “This scheme has evolved through extensive consultation with many stakeholders. Today’s announcement is the culmination of a lot of hard work, engagement  and collaboration to deliver the best possible scheme. We hope to start on site in 2016 and to deliver the student element by summer 2018.”
