Newcastle City Council plans major council housing revamp scheme

Up to a fifth of Newcastle’s public housing stock could go in a major city-wide regeneration project.

The scheme will target certain “giro ghetto” council estates, including Elswick, Scotswood and Cruddas Park in the city’s West End and Walkergate in the Eastend, where around 6,000 council homes out of 40,000 could be demolished. Meanwhile, reinvestment in the more “popular” estates looks likely, as well as the development of infrastructure such as new schools and health centres, with links to retail schemes and transport connections.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne City Council’s policy and resources committee will consider a report setting out the regeneration strategy at the end of this month and a shortlist of consultants will also be drawn up to develop a draft masterplan, for which work will begin over the summer for completion in the autumn.
