Newport residential proposals thrown into doubt by planning committee

Proposals for a large scale residential development to house workers at Newport’s new £1.7bn Lucky Goldstar plant have been thrown into doubt by the recommendations of Newport Council’s planning and highways committee.

Consortium Greenwood Park was drawing up plans to develop 4,000 houses next to the new factory at Coedkernew, West Newport. But the Council’s planning committee has come against any residential development to the west of the town.

“We want to protect the green space between Newport and Cardiff,” explained Brian Adcock, Newport County Borough Council’s director of development and transport. The Committee is also concerned to prevent further congestion on Junction 28 of the M4 which would be generated by large scale residential development.

Instead the committee has earmarked a number of sites in East Newport for residential development including Llanwern, Langstone and Caerleon.

An estimated 11,000 homes are needed in the area by 2011 to meet housing needs generated by inward investment into Newport.

Adcock also admitted insufficient land has been allocated for industrial development to capitalise on the LG investment.
