Newton Energi plans Newcastle energy storage scheme

Newton Energi has submitted a planning application for a 100 MW battery energy storage facility in Lemington, Newcastle.

The proposed scheme would be used for renewable solar and wind energy for the National Grid. The three-acre application site, to the east and west of Riversdale Way, consists of two parcels of abandoned industrial land of 34,000 sq ft and 92,000 sq ft.

Ken Smithers, managing director of Newton Energi, told EG: “The project is part of the UK drive to zero carbon, and has been sited at this location due to its proximity to the Stella North substation.”

Smithers added: “Battery storage technology has a key part to play in ensuring homes and businesses can be powered by green energy, even when the sun isn’t shining, or the wind has stopped blowing.

“The UK government estimates technologies like battery storage systems – supporting the integration of more low-carbon power, heat and transport technologies – could save the UK energy system up to £40bn by 2050, ultimately reducing people’s energy bills.”

Newton Energi has been advised by Max Consulting.
