NHS faces property challenge

NHS-sign-THUMB.jpegMIPIM UK 2015: NHS Property Services says it is facing a period of significant change as it takes on the challenge of managing its portfolio more efficiently.

Speaking to Estates Gazette at MIPIM UK, Elaine Hewitt, chief executive of NHS Property Services, said: “In the three years of its existence we have delivered great things in terms of cost reduction and value realisation, and we are building on that. We are planning on accelerating our financial contribution back to the NHS.”

To date, NHS Property Services has made 150 disposals, netting £100m in capital proceeds.

But Hewitt said there are major challenges: “We have to do more to support the NHS better and we are not as customer-orientated as an organisation as I would like us to be. I am trying to turn this organisation to face outwards.”

Hewitt said there is a lot more scope to manage the NHS Property Services portfolio, which makes up 10% of total NHS property, more efficiently.

She added: “We are driving a number of transformation programmes across the sphere of our operations from asset management, facilities management, procurement so there is a lot to do.”
