NHS Property Services puts 290-home site up for sale

NHS Property Services has won planning permission for 290 homes on the former St George’s Hospital site in Hornchurch, east London, and put the development up for sale.

The consent includes 15% affordable housing on the 28.9-acre site, while a 4-acre plot is being kept for a new health facility.

The site has been vacant since clinical services moved out in October 2012.

The Havering site is on brownfield land and went to the planning inspectorate for an appeal decision after NHS Property Services agreed amendments with Havering council for the outline scheme.

The planning inspector concluded the proposal would not result in a greater impact on the green belt than the existing development.
The outline permission is for 204 new-build homes and 86 conversion units, with houses and flats.

John Westwood, director of asset management at NHS Property Services, said: “We welcome this decision, which clearly demonstrates how we can help the NHS by using our expertise to unlock development potential and achieve best value for surplus sites.”

SW Planning advised NHS Property Services.

Savills has been appointed to handle the sale.
