NHS Property Services has sold the former Bridgwater Hospital in Somerset for £1.6m to a local hotelier with plans for a new Best Western Hotels branch.
The site has planning permission for an 80-bedroom hotel with a gym, swimming pool, day nursery and three homes. Bridgwater Hospital closed in 2014 with its services transferred to a new purpose-built £33m facility.
Alan White, senior transaction manager for NHS Property Services, said: “We are pleased to be returning vital funds to the NHS while releasing this historic building so that it can be brought back to use.”
NHS Property Services is a not-for-profit private company that controls 10% of the NHS estate. It is owned by the Department of Health and will use the revenue raised through rents for reinvestment in the estate.
