NHS trust takes top floor at Prologis’ Cambridge building

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is to open a histopathology facility on the top floor of 1000 Discovery Drive on Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

The trust has signed a 15-year lease for 23,000 sq ft, which will be used to provide diagnostic pathology services, supporting clinical trials and biotechnological research into diseases.

The move comes as the previous facility housing the histopathology department is no longer fit for purpose. The new facility is expected to benefit NHS patients from Cambridge and across the East of England, including those receiving treatment at the trust’s Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Earlier this year, EG revealed that BioNTech was in talks to take around 40,000 sq ft in the building. It is now understood that the company has doubled up on its requirement and will occupy the remainder of 1000 Discovery Drive. It is likely to pay between £60 and £65 per sq ft.

Situated on the southern edge of the campus, the five-storey 1000 Discovery Drive, which is owned and has been developed by Prologis, provides a total of 103,000 sq ft of laboratory and office space. The building has recently achieved completion and is part of the current wave of expansion under way at Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Andrew Blevins, head of life sciences at Prologis UK, said: “We expect 1000 Discovery Drive to be fully let before long, and are eager to commence the next stage of our plan – the phased delivery of up to another 300,000 sq ft of laboratory-enabled space, with further delivery expected in 2025.”
