Northern Ireland and the Scottish Highlands and Islands are likely to lose Objective 1 status after today’s European Union (EU) Berlin summit.
The meeting is expected to reach an agreement on regional aid spending between 2000 and 2006.
West Wales and the valleys, South Yorkshire, Merseyside and Cornwall are likely to qualify for this highest category of EU regional aid.
