Nicholson Estates gets Manchester tower consent

Nicholson Estates has won consent for its £35m flagship residential tower on the Great Northern Warehouse site in Manchester city centre.

The 25-storey scheme will comprise 237 apartments and penthouses, with a bar, restaurant and retail units on the ground floor, and will be located between Manchesters G-Mex Centre and the Grade II-listed Great Northern Warehouse.

Earlier this year, Nicholson paid Morrison Merlin £3.8m for the freehold of the 0.13ha (0.33 acres) site at the junction of Windmill Street and Watson Street. The controversial site already had detailed consent for the construction of an 11,148 sq m (120,000 sq ft) office building, known as the Great Northern Tower, before Nicholson took it over for a change of use.

Bruce Walker, managing director of Nicholson Estates, said: “This is the only scheme to offer residential accommodation in the Great Northern Warehouse area.”

Work is expected to commence immediately and the scheme is set to be complete in 2002.
