Alison Nimmo has been appointed as the chief executive of the new Sheffield Regeneration Company – a partnership between Sheffield City Council, English Partnerships and Yorkshire Forward.
Nimmo was formerly the project director of Manchester Millennium – the task force set up to spearhead the rebuilding of Manchester city centre after the 1996 bomb blast.
The Sheffield Regeneration Company has no formal statutory powers of its own, but will work closely with the city council to focus on the city centre and key gateway routes into the city.
Each partner of the urban regeneration venture has contributed £250,000 to fund its first year in operation. The venture has been set up with a fixed life of five to seven years to attract new investment and development into the heart of Sheffield.
The former Sheffield City Development Agency will transfer into the new company. Its existing projects such as the Castlegate project, Parkway and the Setts, will also be taken over by the new group.
Richard Caborn, Minister for Trade, said: “This is a great chance to build on the good work of the past few years and put the city centre economy back on track. The new regeneration company will provide joined-up solutions, bringing new investment and jobs to a transformed city centre of which we can all be proud.”
