No Christmas miracle for high street retail

Christmas failed to provide a miracle for the high street as festive footfall fell 4%.

The last week of 2019 saw shopper numbers drop year-on-year, following a lacklustre lead-up to Christmas and finishing off a miserable year for the retail sector.

According to retail analyst Springboard discounting failed to attract shoppers to bricks and mortar stores, with research by the BRC and Nielsen suggesting the discounts were deeper than ever, with prices falling by a further 1.5% in December for non-food items.
