No-fault evictions to be scrapped

No-fault evictions will be scrapped by a bill set to feature in this week’s Queen’s Speech.

Measures to protect vulnerable tenants in rental housing in England and Wales were promised in the Conservatives’ 2019 manifesto, which committed the government to a “renter’s reform bill” abolishing section 21 orders. The current rules allow landlords to throw out their tenants with eight weeks’ notice, without explaining why.

Rather than a stand-alone renters’ bill, officials hope the legislation will be included in the broader Levelling Up Bill” being put forward by Michael Gove, the secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities.
