Car traffic is almost squeezed out of London landmarks around Trafalgar Square, Parliament Square and Whitehall under government-backed plans announced yesterday.
The World Squares For All initiative aims to complete a master plan for the Whitehall and Westminster areas by next spring. In the current plans the road on the north side of Trafalgar Square in front of the National Gallery could be replaced by a piazza. A similar idea would ban traffic from the south side of Parliament Square beside Westminster Abbey.
Westminster City Council is managing the study on behalf of a steering group, led by the government office for London, which includes English Heritage, the Royal Parks, the Parliamentary Works Department, London Transport, the Traffic Directorate for London and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
