Norfolk councillors are considering a tourist tax on holiday lets in a bid to claw back tax lost to the rise in second-home owners.
North Norfolk District Council wants to add a £1 Paris-style tourist levy onto Airbnb bookings to help bolster finances, which have come under strain from a rise in second homes that has reduced the number of council tax payers.
Councils will soon have the power to apply council tax premiums of up to 100% on second homes, but many are concerned that holiday let owners will sidestep extra council taxes by opting to pay cheaper business rates instead.
