A 390ft figure came second to Anish Kapoor’s much-criticised design to mark the 2012 Games, according to the Sunday Times.
Antony Gormley, the sculptor behind the Angel of the North, planned to build a 390ft naked statue of himself to tower over the London Olympics.
The winning design, a £19m knot of red steel designed by Kapoor, will be called the Arcelor-Mittal Orbit and funded by Lakshmi Mittal, Britain’ richest man.
