Manufacturer Numatic International has bought a seven-acre site in Chard, Somerset, to turn into a £30m factory to produce Henry vacuum cleaners.
The site, on the Millfield Road Industrial Estate, was acquired from food producer Oscar Mayer after it outlined plans to close the site earlier this year. Oscar Mayer is also shutting down its operations at nearby Furnham Road.
Numatic said the acquisition, adjacent to its main operations, comes at a “particularly opportune time” as it seeks to “substantially scale up its capacity to meet increasing domestic and overseas demand”.
It aims to construct a state-of-the-art production operation for the Henry vacuum range. This will utilise the entire site and require a £30m investment.
The manufacturer underlined its hopes that “planning consent will be forthcoming without delay so that the demolition of the existing buildings can be commenced, and construction of the new facility started as soon as possible”.
Katie Fowler of JLL, which represented Oscar Mayer, said: ‘This transaction will undoubtedly unlock further economic growth for the company, town and region.”
She added that JLL is searching for an alternative operator to take on Oscar Mayer’s other premises at Furnham Road.
