Number of homes planned for green-belt land up 54% in a year

The number of new homes planned for green-belt land has risen by 50% since last year to 424,672, research by the Campaign to Protect Rural England shows.

Its policy director, Tom Fyans, noted that the type of housing being built would do little to address the issue of affordable housing. Some 70% of the new homes that are planned are not classified as affordable.

A spokesman for the Department for Communities and Local Government said it did not recognise the figures, and that the government was committed to protecting the green belt.
