Some 14% of Scottish households live in privately rented accommodation, triple the level in 1999.
The number of owner-occupiers in 2015, at 61%, was unchanged from 1999 but off a peak of 66% reached in 2009, the Scottish Household Survey showed.
The percentage of those living in council or housing association homes has fallen to 23% from 32% over the 16 years of the survey.
