Wilson Bowden and Ashcroft have secured cinema group Odeon for a seven-screen cinema at their £125m Marketplace Barnsley scheme.
The cinema operator has signed a 15-year lease at the development, which is due for completion in 2015.
Marketplace Barnsley will create a central retail core for the town and is anchored by Debenhams, 35 shops and restaurants, plus parking.
It sits alongside the new Market Hall, which will incorporate the indoor market.
Wilson Bowden director Will Robinson said: “The addition of a leisure offering diversifies Marketplace Barnsley and will attract people from a wider catchment and encourage spend in the area.
“It is exciting to see the development progress and each signing takes us one step closer to transforming Barnsley into the retail and leisure hub it is going to be 2015.”
