DATA: Spending on office technology has doubled in the past five years, outstripping money spent on services and mechanical, electrical and plumbing services.
Since 2011, the average company spend on technology has risen from 10% of workplace operating budgets to 18%, according to a survey of 100 chief executives and global heads of real estate by design firm Unispace.
It comes as overall spending on office space design declined with cash for both services and furniture dropping. By 2020, the report says office tech spending may outstrip all others, with the emergence of artificial intelligence through development including intelligent apps which recommend the best place for a task to be completed depending on the time of day.
With the barriers between home and the office breaking down, Natasha Bonugli, European design director of Unispace, said: “Workplace design needs to entice workers back into the office and find more ways to engage with them. Technology will be critical to ensuring the workforce connect on a human level.”
