Olympics hits retail footfall

Retail footfall in London during the first Olympics Games weekend fell 21% year-on-year.

According to Springboard, footfall was down 9.1% across the UK last weekend compared with the same period last year.

The worst day was Saturday 28 July, when footfall in London tumbled 23.6%.

Diane Wehrle, head of retail insights at Springboard, said: “Town centres and high streets across the UK had predicted that the double whammy of major televised sporting event and good weather would not be good for sales last weekend, but the Olympic drop off is still more than expected, with high street weekend footfall falling from 1.4% to -9.0% in just one week.”
