Ominous omission for eco-towns

The future of eco-towns was thrown into doubt this week after ministers signalled that they would not be included in England’s emerging regional development plans.

None of the South East’s three proposed eco-towns was included in alterations to the south-east England regional spatial strategy, which was published last Thursday.

Michael Crook, planning partner at Cushman & Wakefield, said the exclusion of eco-towns from RSSs meant that they would “almost certainly be the subject of a public inquiry”.

He added: “It is highly unlikely that a developer will get an eco-town through the system before 2010. If there were to be a change of government, they might never see the light of day.

Last week, the Wellcome Trust refused to sell 270 acres of land that had been earmarked by Tesco for a 13,000-home scheme in Hanley Grange, Cambridgeshire.
