On the Olympics

2 August 2010 It has all gone a little quiet on the eastern front after the smorgasbord of announcements around the “two years to go until the Olympics milestone” at the beginning of last week.

The athletes at this week’s European Championships have been doing their best to suggest that there is going to be a spectacular performance by Team GB in 2012.

It emerged this week that Australian developer Westfield is in talks with Olympic organisers about leasing 200,000 sq ft of land outside its new Stratford shopping centre, next to the Olympic Park, to the hordes of people who will need to have a base near the Games site and are keen to pitch tents there for the duration of London 2012.

The land, earmarked for the office blocks and new homes which will form part of the legacy use for the park, is currently empty and boasts uninterrupted views of the Olympic stadium.

I think one can safely assume that other significant landowners within a train journey of the site are doing the same: Quintain and Lend Lease at Greenwich Peninsula, the King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership, the London Development Agency at Silvertown Quays and so on.

Indeed, anyone with a slice of land in the vicinity should give LOCOG a quick call.
