One in six care homes are at risk of failure, according to a survey of 7,497 homes by accountants Moore Stephens.
Some 1,210, or 16% of the total, were found to be in financial distress. That is up from 12% a year earlier.
The mixture of rising costs, funding cuts and an ageing population has created a volatile situation, with many companies now showing signs of significant financial stress, Lee Causer, restructuring partner at Moore Stephens, said.
